Entries focus on illuminating Africanisms (cultural retentions traceable to an African origin) and cultural continuities (ongoing practices and processes through which African culture continues to be created and formed).
The Museum seeks to understand American history through the lens of the African-American experience, and is the only national museum devoted exclusively to African-American history and culture.
