Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues FSU Event Poster

Framingham State University was awarded the Judith Rivas Mini Grant Award to support the Latinos and Baseball event.

What is the purpose of the event?

The event is part of a multi-year collecting initiative to identify artifacts that reflect the social and cultural influence of the game in Latino communities.

How do I find information about parking and the location of the Athletic Center?

Go to the interactive campus map and select the parking and Athletic Center box.

Does the event cost anything? Who could go?

It is free and open to the public. We welcome people of all ages who love the game of baseball.

What kinds of items can I bring to have scanned or photographed?

Bring any baseball related item that is personal and special to you. If you played baseball, it could be your little league trophy, jersey, bat, baseball or photograph. If you have a favorite Latino baseball player, you can bring your favorite memorabilia like a ticket stub, photograph or program.

Why bring items to the event?

Once we scan or photograph your artifact, Framingham State University will create an online collection in the institution's digital repository. The online collection will be a wonderful way to view pictures of the event and also showcase the community's baseball artifacts.

How is the Smithsonian involved with FSU?

Framingham State University is proud to be one of just six Smithsonian Affiliates in Massachusetts and the only one located at a higher education institution. Smithsonian Affiliations is a national outreach program that develops long-term, high quality partnerships with museums and educational organizations in order to share collections, exhibitions, learning opportunities, and research expertise. Framingham State University is celebrating our affiliation with the Smithsonian at 2:30 in the McAuliffe Center where important artifacts related to two archives will be on display: the Christa McAuliffe Archive, and the First Public Normal School in the US..

Baseball has been and continues to be an important means for celebrating national and ethnic identities, building communities, and negotiating race and class relations in our increasingly globalized world.
