An introduction to the citation manager Zotero and how to use it.

Finding Full-Text (Article Linker)

You have probably used the "Article Linker" button before in databases to locate full-texts of articles. You can incorporate this function into Zotero to find the full-text of articles you have saved in your Zotero Library. 

To set up your Zotero Library to locate full-texts through the Whittemore Library, copy and paste the below link into the OpenURL resolver box (on the Advanced tab in Zotero Preferences) and click "OK".

To find the full-text of an article, select the article of interest, then click the green arrow above the right column in Zotero. 

Click "Library Lookup" on this list. A browser window should open showing you whether the Whittemore Library provides access to this article. If we do not, follow the links on the library website to request through interlibrary loan the article you are interested in.

Zotero Groups

Creating and using Zotero groups allows you to share collections with a class, work with colleagues on projects, and stay in touch with what others in your department or field are working on. You can create a new group in either the standalone application or in the web version of Zotero. In the standalone application, create a group by clicking on the "new group" icon (looks like 2 people). If you are using Zotero online, log into your account, then click "groups" at the top of your screen, followed by "create a new group." From here, you will need to choose your membership type before inviting others to join your group. Read the descriptions of each type below to make the best selection for your group. Private Groups

  • Private groups provide a means of collaboration among group members without creating any public face for the group online.
  • Only group members and users invited to join the group are able to see the group's page.
  • Private groups are completely hidden from group searches. They are not shown on members' public profile pages and will not appear in search engine results.

Public, Closed Membership

  • Closed membership allows a group to be controlled but also to publicly present its work and sources.
  • Anyone can view the group page, but to join is by invitation (or requesting an invitation) only.
  • If the group has a citation library, administrators can choose to show or hide the library from non-members.

Public, Open Membership

  • Open public groups are useful for the broadest discussion and collaboration.
  • The group page is public, and anyone who wants to may join instantly.
  • If the group has a citation library, administrators can choose to show or hide the library from non-members.
  • Open public groups do not allow file sharing.
  • At zotero.org, you can search for existing groups related to your research area.
