The Access Services Department checks materials in and out of the library, handles renewals and overdues, takes in payment of library fines, maintains the book stacks, and answers general information questions. The Circulation desk is also where you pick up and drop off Interlibrary Loan materials.
Reserves are items selected by professors for use by their classes. The majority of reserve materials may only be used in the library. Most reserve items are kept at the Circulation desk. Students need an activated library card in order to use reserve materials.

This department covers a wide range of responsibilities including: curation and management of the Library’s e-Resources (subscription databases, e-books, online services, digital toolsets) that are maintained and made available for students and faculty. Management of the resources involves operating the "backend" administrative levels of these services. Supporting these resources includes: understanding their intended uses; being able to explain these services to the campus community; and creation of guides and tutorials. The department ensures the availability of these resources and for correcting issues when they occur; and for providing analysis to support the decision to renew or cancel subscriptions. The department also supports emerging technologies and the Digital Repository, public galleries/special collections materials, digitization services, and technical processes like photo editing and other related services.

The Technical Services department at Whittemore Library works collaboratively with many other departments within the library to provide timely and accurate discovery of all the resources in our various collections to our students, faculty and the greater global community. Once purchased or gifted to our library, all materials are managed in Tech Services. Our responsibilities include cataloging, data entry and physical processing of these materials and many other special projects. We also work closely with the University’s Digital Repository to make those unique collections findable. If we get a book, an iPad, a bag of rocks or some puppets, we want you to be able to find it and use it. We may be behind the scenes, but we are busy!
