“Fair Use…that’s when we can put one chapter of any book on reserve without getting in trouble… right?”
Mmm…not quite. ‘Fair Use’ is one of several exceptions deliberately built-in to copyright law to allow some, limited use of copyrighted materials. But did you know there’s actually NO one hard and fast, simple ‘rule’ about how much you can use, so that you know for sure that you’re doing Fair Use correctly? Nope. None. Nada.
Confused (and maybe a little paranoid) yet? Or do you blithely feel that Fair Use is a bubble whose invocation protects your use of copyrighted works like some sort of magic spell because you’re in education, a small fry, and they’ll never bother to come looking for you?
Fair Use exists to give you options – so come find out how it really works.
Bonus: The Secret Formula that Judges use during civil court trials to decide whether the defendant really did break copyright law…or not!
