Finding Books

Of course the library's most traditional service is the provision of books, and our collections have many kind of texts on offer, both physically within the library, and digitally as ebooks.

If you want access to the library's physical books you can read them within the library, or check them out of the library. In order to check out books you need to have a Minuteman Library Card, which you can apply for within the Library itself at circulation, or online.

In addition to our physical collections the library also provides access to a large number of digital ebooks which can be read online, or in some cases downloaded to a machine to be read on a limited time frame.

Physical Collections and Minuteman

The Whittemore Library is part of the Minuteman Library Consortium, a group of over 50 libraries in Massachusetts that provides service in the Metrowest area. This means that when you get your library card to access our physical collections, you also have access to the physical collections of many other local libraries. If you want to search only the Whittemore Library's physical collection you can search using Ramsearch, which has information for all the books which we have locally.

On the other hand, if you want to search the catalog of all the Minuteman Libraries, you can search using the library's Minuteman Catalog page. This page provides direct access to the library's physical collections, as well as to the physical collections of the other Minuteman Libraries.

Ebook Collections

The library's subscribes to Ebsco Ebooks, and provides access to our extensive ebook collection both through Ramsearch, and through the database "Ebsco Ebooks". This collection is mainly academic texts, including many that have been specifically ordered for courses by professors. If you want to search these ebooks you can either search them in Ramsearch, applying filters search only for ebooks, or through Ebsco Ebooks database (link). In addition for many Ebsco Ebooks it's possible to temporarily download the ebook so you can read it without an internet connection. This requires software called "Adobe Digital Editions" (link) and you can find out more about downloading Ebsco ebooks here

In addition to the library's own ebook collection, we have access to a variety of ebooks through the Minuteman Library Consortium through a service called "Overdrive". This service is more used for popular texts, but it does provide access to resources for students. In addition to ebooks the Overdrive service also provides access to audiobooks. It can be accessed either from the Minuteman Catalog page or the A-Z database list.
