What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan allows you to request books and other resources from other libraries when we do not have the book or resource at this library!

A complex term for a simple service.

Interlibrary Loan Delivery Service

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the general system of cooperative exchange of items among institutions for the purpose of fulfilling the informational needs of their patrons. ILL Services are ONLY available for current students, faculty and staff. University designated Emeritus faculty members may also utilize ILL services.

How to request materials with ILL

Login to Tipasa HERE to activate your account, place new requests, and manage current requests. Make sure to fill in all of the information in the form in order to ensure that your request will go through quickly. Users can easily and quickly submit interlibrary loan requests and track them in real time. Users will also have the option to setup email or text notifications and customize the digital delivery of requested electronic materials.

Journal Article Requests

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests for journal articles can be created, submitted, and managed through the ILL My Account pageYou will be notified when your requested materials are available and will be available through a provided link or the ILL My Account page. Articles become available fairly quickly, usually within a few days to a week.

Journal articles can also be requested during database searches. If FSU does not have access to the full text of one of the search results, a partially filled-out ILL Request form should be available. Click on the link to open the form, fill it out, and submit the form.

Print Book Requests

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests for books and other physical resources can be created, submitted, and managed through the ILL My Account page. These items will be available for pickup and return within the library at the first-floor Circulation Desk.

Books and physical resources do not have a specific arrival time. Items requested from other libraries in the Minuteman Library Network (MLN) will usually arrive within one week. Items requested outside the network may take a few weeks to arrive.

Print Requests for Online Students

We are NOT able to provide Distance-only FSU students with ILL loans of physical books. Please check our Ebsco e-Books Collection for suitable monographs or, if we then do not have a specific book you are seeking, please contact your local public library to inquire about local ILL services.

Borrowing Time and Renewals

Lending period of materials

Items received from other Minuteman libraries will have a three-week lending period.  Items received from outside of the network will have lending periods set by the lending institution.

Renewal of items

Items received from other Minuteman Libraries may be renewed, unless another patron has requested that item.  Renewals may be done by calling the Circulation desk (508-626-4650), accessing "My Account" in the library catalog, or stopping at the Circulation desk.  You do not have to bring the items with you in order to have them renewed.  Items from outside of the network can only be renewed with permissions from the owning library. ILL renews can be requested through the ILL My Accounts page.

Walk-in ILL Services for Students

Massachusetts State University students may borrow items from any public college, community college, or university in the state. A valid student ID showing proof of enrollment for the semester entitles the student to borrowing privileges based on the lending library's rules.  At Whittemore Library there is a limit of three items from the Curriculum Library.  There is currently no limit on borrowing items from the main collection.
