Finding Articles

The library provides access to many kinds of articles, including academic articles published in scholarly journals, magazine articles published for specific trades or special interests, newspaper articles both current and historical, as well as many other kinds of publication which can useful to our patrons.

Because of the variety of options, it can be hard to know where to start. This page explains the main methods of finding articles using the library website.

Finding Articles with Ram Search

Ramsearch is a great place to get started looking for articles. It searches most the library's article databases, which include both scholarly and more trade focused articles from a huge variety of publications. Because it searches so much of the library's collection however, it can be helpful to narrow your selection when searching Ramsearch. There are many ways to this, and for a full explanation see the page on using ramsearch (link). After searching any topic using Ramsearch you'll be taken to a results page which features the option to limit the result to "Scholarly (peer reviewed) Journals" as well as "Full Text". Checking these options will result in only that type of article being displayed as a result of the search. Searches can be further narrowed using "Filters", also available as a button. The number of filters available in Ramsearch is too large to cover here, but they allow you to very specifically tailor your search to specific types of article, publication, date, and many other specific features of articles you might be searching for. If you want to apply these filters before searching you can do so using the "Advanced Search" feature.

Finding Articles using Databases

For specific projects or research it may be helpful to drill down and use specific databases for research. On top of journal and newspaper articles, the library's databases also provide access to many other tools, such as field specific thesauruses, simplified statistical data, or citations from a field. In order to view these databases individually you can look them up on the library's A-Z database list. If you want to look for databases covering specific topics or fields, you can change the database listing to showcase specific databases.

Finding Journals with Journal Search

For some purposes it might be helpful to browse specific journals to see similar types of articles. If you want to look up our holdings for a specific journal you can look that journal up in the library's Journal Search. Please note that the library receives much of it's digital journal access through databases, so some journals may have embargoes limiting exactly which issues may be viewable.
