ARTICLES (PERIODICALS, LIT)

Print Articles

  • Journal Search - Find out which of our journals still exist in print form (usually back issues)

Online Articles

  • RamSearch - Limit to 'news', 'magazines' or 'academic journals' source type
  • A - Z Databases filtered to show just 'Database', 'Journals' or 'Newspapers"
  • Journal Search - For scholarly articles, make sure it stays limited to journals only
  • Directory of Open Access Journals - Free online journals!
  • Google Scholar - A specialized Google search page - lets you search in a large index of scholarly articles that Google search bots have found. That doesn't mean that the full text is available - but when it is, you will see a link next to search results, to go to it.
  • Semantic Scholar*AI-assisted search of a very large online scholarly articles index - it includes Google Scholar's index of articles and additional article indexes
  • Consensus* - Free version of AI-assisted app promising 'hallucination-free' search & synopsis / analysis of results from the Semantic Scholar article index. (Free version lets you do this a few times a month; pay membership removes those limits.)

* Why are 2 search tools that use AI and are not provided by the Library included here?

While we know that not everyone in higher education feels comfortable using tools that make use of artificial intelligence (due to AI's still relatively 'unproven' performance in some areas), some of the newer tools can greatly assist researchers who are tracking citations in order to ensure that they have found all the relevant articles they need for a sufficiently-comprehensive literature review.

Thus, the last two suggestions are offered in the spirit of introducing FSU scholars to a potentially useful and time-saving tool. (Ultimately, of course, time will tell.)

GREY LIT

Print

  • Minuteman - Minuteman doesn't really have filters for grey lit. - add a relevant word, like 'report', to your search

Online

  • RamSearch - Limit to 'conference materials', 'reports', or 'dissertations/theses' source types
  • A - Z Databases - Depending on database, limit to 'conference materials', 'reports', or 'dissertations/theses' format
  • Government Websites - Look for 'reports'
  • Academic (College / University) Websites - Look for 'reports', 'white papers', 'working papers'
  • Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO)* Websites - Look for 'reports'

* Be very cautious with these types of sites, though  - NGOs are supposed to be 'non-partisan', but many sites out there, often labeled as 'Foundations' or 'Think-Tanks', are plenty partisan, absolutely seeking to influence both public discourse and policy. If you recognize a website as partisan in a certain direction, though, you might be able to use it to get ideas for a specific 'side's' arguments when writing argumentative papers.
