Sad but often True...

When a Publishing / Media company that has published print magazines for a long time transitions to the web and puts up a website...they don't always put ALL the same content up there as is in the 'actual' magazine's issues (still made available in print as well.).

So, yes; you could come across an article in a magazine that's not on their website, (or maybe it was made free to access for a short time then removed or put behind a paywall), and you now have no way to get back to it - sometimes even if you have access to full text from that magazine in some other way (such as from the Whittemore Library).

Many of these publishers (I refer to popular newspapers and magazines) also have what's called a 'soft paywall' - you get to read a few articles per month, then they lock it down to you and recommend that you subscribe. Generally, as content has moved online...the public hasn't wanted to pay for it much... not when so very much is Free! (And of REALLY variable 'quality', of course, but we won't go there right now.)

That bait and switch is frustrating as all get-out... but an unfortunate fact to be aware of.  And this is a good reminder to all of us as individuals finding content online, that the article we've found and bookmarked may have vanished the next time we go to see it...an argument for downloading when possible if it's a really important information source.

pointing handThat said, don't forget that the FSU community at least can sign up for free access to the New York Time's online website!
